What is an End of Life Doula?

The word doula (pronounced doo-la) comes from the Greek word doulē – roughly translated means ‘person of service’. A Doula is a non-medical person providing support, education, guidance and companionship to the dying and their loved ones. Through providing information, gently having those tough discussions and most importantly, listening, Doulas guide and support people to have their End of Life in line with their values and wishes. Doulas can be with a person for months, days or even hours leading up to their death and often provide support and assistance with after death care.
